Beijing to Lhasa:
The search for a Balanced Life

David Meek, Summer 2007, NY / NY
With the famous Dr. Ho in his laboratory.
“I spent a lot of time reflecting on my trip, my job, and my life.”
“I climbed to the top of hill overlooking Lhasa City. I purchased a string with over 20 prayer flags.  As I tied the flags to the mountain, I felt a sense of peace and calm that I have never experienced before.  I was as far away from New York City as I possibly could be”

TIBET
The early morning clouds disappear as 1.2 Billion Chinese begin to wake up.  The views, green hills, and the Great Wall reinvigorate my senses and remind me of all I am capable of doing with my life
We made it to a village called Baisha.  There is a famous doctor called Dr. Ho that lives there.  We were lucky enough to meet him without any other tourists around.  We talked for several hours about traditional medicine.  He showed me his "research lab,” how he makes the potions, and the fresh plants he harvests from the mountains.  His herbs have been used in several studies at Mayo Clinic.  I asked Dr. Ho why he does not leave his village and conduct research in Beijing or Shanghai.  His calling in life is to help the villagers and poor people in his community.  He responded that he welcomes the world into his clinic, but he can’t leave his patients.  His two children are at medical school studying to be traditional doctors also. When they come home, they help their father document his research and all the names of the plants he uses in his "tonics."  He gave me several types of powders to make tea when I go home!  It smells funny but should rid me of intestinal parasites that may have unexpectedly joined me on this journey! ”
